Meet Katie

Photo 18-07-2015 17 47 49I have been practising as a Reiki Master since 2009 when I qualified in the Seven Level System in Sydney, Australia. I also studied and gained Counselling qualifications (Humanistic approach) in 2008 having studied over a number of years. This led me to The Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education in London where I gained an Advanced Diploma in the Application of the Arts in Therapy and Education in 2011.

I now offer Theiki which integrates the Arts with Reiki treatments according to your needs as well as stand alone Reiki and Arts Workshops. I am registered with Holistic Insurance Services.

To facilitate workshops and treat holistically I believe it is important to have both the training and practical experience but also to have had a broad life experience. When I was 18, I worked as a Camp Counsellor in New York and travelled afterwards for 3 months. I then began my professional life as a Journalist, having studied on the National Training of Journalists Course at Highbury College in Portsmouth. I had always enjoyed expressing myself through writing. After the course I worked on a local newspaper and for a Press Agency for about 3 years but there were too many limitations to exploring creativity so I decided to change direction.

I obtained a 2:1 – BSc Hons degree in Sociology at Portsmouth University. Before I started the degree I participated in a humbling Community Project in Ecuador where I met with extreme poverty but was struck by simple joyful living and have carried this impression with me.

After University I worked in an acute department in a Mental Health Unit as a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant. Mental Health has fascinated me, been insightful, thought provoking and a little sad at times.

My working background has mainly been in Child Protection specialising in Bereavement and I was also a Child and Family Support Worker at a Hospice. My clients were children and families who had lost someone close to them, who had suffered severe trauma, been diagnosed with serious illnesses and told they had limited time to live. I have been commended for this work by colleagues and clients receiving letters of appreciation. I feel privileged to have witnessed the depth, resilience and beauty of the human spirit.

I qualified as a Trainer (Level 3 NVQ – Direct Training & Support) in 2009 and my style of training and delivery abstains from too much ‘front loading’ as I like to promote a respectful sharing approach.

Over the years I have found myself more and more drawn to therapeutic and healing work. The experience at The Arts Institute changed my life, the way I perceive the arts and creativity and helped to ‘unstick’ certain areas of my life. It provided a safe outlet for me to express and get to know myself better and proved valuable and inspirational in so many ways.

Long distance running was a big part of my life and became a form of both self discipline and meditation to me. I achieved close to elite marathon times (3hrs18) but have come to recognise that I have needed something gentler in my life, to ease off a little,  honouring myself with some self love. I invite you to do the same.

I am mother to a spirited little girl, very proud that my home birth experience was both empowering and positive and have an interest in a conscious parenting style, attachment theory and a peaceful approach where possible. Whilst I advocate a healthy holistic lifestyle – juicing, making alternative healthy treats (which will be on offer in my workshops) I fully acknowledge how the stresses and strains of modern living can leave us feeling depleted and worn and I sincerely hope that you will take something beneficial away with you whether you come for a Reiki or Theiki session or to one of my Therapeutic Arts workshops.
